THE BAD NEWS...
THE BAD NEWS...

 
In Pontotoc County…

- 33.5 out of every 1000 girls from age
  15-17 will give birth.
- 4% of students in grades 9-12 will drop out
  before they graduate.
- 220 youth out of every 100,000 are arrested
  for a violent crime.  That's an increase of 327%
  over the last 10 years.
- 26 out of every 1000 children are victims of
  abuse and/or neglect.  That's an increase of
  182% over the last 15 years.
- 82 youth were arrested for drug and/or alcohol
  possession in the year 2000.
- Pontotoc County ranks 68th out of 77 counties
  in Oklahoma (1 being the best and 77 being
  the worst) in child deaths. 
- Pontotoc County ranks 65th in child abuse
- Pontotoc County ranks 34th in births to young
  teens
- Pontotoc County ranks 34th in high school
  dropouts

 
Everyday in Oklahoma…

- 8 girls under the age of 17 give birth
- 25 kids quit high school without graduating.
  (That adds up to over 9,000 kids a year!)
- 86 youth are arrested for a crime; of those 86
  youth, 3 are arrested for violent crimes such
  as rape, assault, and murder.
- 153 incidents of child abuse/neglect are
  investigated.  Of those 153 incidents, 43
  are confirmed.
- At least 2 children will die; 1 of those will be
  a baby.
- Oklahoma's young people kill themselves at
  almost twice the national rate, with an average
  of 6 suicides per year for persons under 20
  years of age.

 
THE GOOD NEWS…

- 9 out of every 10 teenagers are willing to do
  something to stop crime.
- The rate of birth to young teens in Pontotoc
  County has decreased by 6.2% over the last
  10 years.
- Pontotoc County's infant mortality rate has
  decreased by 2.4% over the last 10 years.
- Out of 77 counties in Oklahoma, Pontotoc
  County ranks 15th in early childhood status
  which includes things such as availability of
  childcare services, adequate prenatal care,
  immunizations of children under 2 years old,
  and low incidents of lead-based poisoning.
